Privacy Policy
We collect as little as we can, keep it no longer than we need, and never sell it. This policy explains, without legalese, what CheckAScam gathers, why, and the control you have over it.
Who this policy covers
This policy applies to CheckAScam.com and describes how we handle information about visitors to the site. We are the data controller for that information. If anything here is unclear, or you want to make a request about your data, you can reach us at [email protected].
What we collect, and why
- Technical and usage data. When you visit, our servers record standard information such as your IP address, the pages you view, and basic details about your session. We use this to run the site, keep it secure, prevent abuse of our tools, and understand in aggregate which guides are useful. The small "session usage" counter you may see in the footer — a count of visits and checks — is generated from this and is tied to your current session only.
- Contact and newsletter data. If you email us or subscribe to our newsletter, we hold the details you provide, such as your email address and message. Newsletter sign-up uses double opt-in, meaning we only add you after you confirm by clicking a link we send. Every newsletter will include an unsubscribe link, and you can withdraw consent at any time by emailing [email protected].
We do not ask for more than we need, and there are no accounts, payments or sensitive personal details required to read the guides or use the site.
How long we keep it
Raw technical logs — the detailed records of individual page views and tool checks — are automatically deleted after 90 days. Beyond that point we retain only aggregated, non-identifying summaries (for example, totals of how many times a page has been viewed), which no longer single you out. Contact and newsletter data is kept for as long as you remain subscribed or the conversation is relevant, and is removed on request or when it is no longer needed.
Cookies
We keep cookies to a minimum. CheckAScam sets a single essential session cookie, which the site needs to function — for example, to keep your session secure and to power that footer usage counter. It is not used to track you across other websites, and it is not sold or shared for advertising. We do not currently use analytics or advertising cookies; if that ever changes, we will update this policy and, where the law requires it, ask for your consent first.
Who we share it with
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for anyone else's marketing. We use a small number of trusted service providers to host and run the site, who process data only on our instructions. We may disclose information where we are legally required to, or to protect the site and its users from fraud and abuse.
Your rights
Under UK data protection law you have the right to ask us to:
- confirm what personal data we hold about you and receive a copy of it;
- correct data that is wrong or incomplete;
- delete your data where there is no good reason for us to keep it;
- restrict or object to how we use it; and
- receive certain data in a portable form.
To exercise any of these, email [email protected] and we will respond within the timeframe the law allows. If you are unhappy with how we have handled your data, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), the UK's data protection regulator, though we would appreciate the chance to put things right first.
Changes to this policy
As the site grows — particularly as our website checker moves from development into general use — we may update this policy. When we make a meaningful change, we will revise the page so the current version is always the one you see here.
